(Email from Judith) "I belong to a church that has accepted gay people into the ministry, and is now performing marriages for gay people. There are things about this church I love, but I do not know if it is right to attend a church that doesn’t follow what the bible says. When I talked to a priest of the church regarding these things, he said science has discovered that some people are born gay. The priest also talked about the old laws of the bible and how they do not apply to the Christians of today, such as eating pork and shell fish. I believe in following the Bible as it is written, and I do not believe being gay is acceptable in God’s eyes . . . Is it wrong in God’s eyes to attend a church that does not follow the bible? And, if it is not right to attend such a church, how do I go about finding one that teaches and follows the bible?"
This priest is selectively deleting portions of Scripture he disagrees with. His logic doesn’t make sense. Homosexuality has nothing to do with the Ceremonial Law of Leviticus (keeping kosher, etc.—which the Bible makes clear is no longer required of us). From the beginning homosexuality has been classified under Moral Law, not Ceremonial. Biblical morality doesn’t change. Would he argue that it’s now ok to murder or rape now? Then why is it ok to commit homosexual acts?
Also keep in mind homosexuality isn’t limited to the Law of Moses or even Sodom and Gomorrah. It’s clearly condemned throughout the New Testament.
“Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality” (1 Corinthians 6:9).
“For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.” (Romans 1:26–27)
“. . . as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (Jude 1:7)
No doubt there are many kind, loving, generous people there and many great things about this gathering, so should you leave? Would you drink a cup of crystal clear water that had a few drops of deadly poison in it? Their teaching is poisoned with the most deadly form of heresy. Should you leave a “church” that supports people in committing a sin that Scripture clearly tells us will lead people to hell? Without a doubt.
