Words of Comfort: Male Elks.

This is going to sound a little crazy, but I will say it anyway. Today’s news revealed that football great Junior Seau suffered brain injury from continual trauma to the head, and many believe that was what led to his 2012 tragic suicide. He was just one of many football players who end up with serious brain damage. Here’s what is going to sound a little crazy. I believe it’s because the players wear helmets. My wife and I watch rugby almost every night. The game is as physical as American football, but they don’t wear helmets. While there is the occasional mild concussion, it’s been years since I heard of any rugby player receiving trauma to the head that led to brain damage. This is because when they make contact with another player or with the ground, they have a God-given instinct to protect the head. Not so with American football. They act like male elks in the mating season, crashing heads with anything and everything, because the helmet has removed the natural instinct to protect the head. The very thing that they are trusting in to protect them from brain injury, is the very thing that is causing it. Of course, even if I’m right, nothing will change because football helmets are a billion dollar industry.
