Words of Comfort: Held Captive.

After I commented "God knows those that love Him," an atheist replied: "Thanks, Ray, that's a relief, because sometimes it sure seems complicated." The whole issue of who is right is going to seem a mess until each of us experience genuine conversion. When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Ephesus, he said, "This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness" (Ephesians 4:17-18).

Until we come to Christ our understanding is darkened, we are ignorant, blind, and given to the pleasures of sin, held captive to unlawful passions. No wonder there is confusion about what is true and what isn't. With this thought in mind, read these verses from John 8:31-32 until you understand what is being said: "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed; And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
