Words of Comfort: Forbidden Magical Fruit...

“You think as soon as I was conceived I was deserving of being tortured in a lake of fire for eternity because a women who was made out of a rib of a man who was made out of mud ate a forbidden magical fruit that a talking snake tricked her into eating?" Ken Scherer

Instead you believe that you are a talking primate[1]—a cousin of bananas[2], who is made from dust[3], and you’re the product of a large bang of hot rock that magically produced life from non-life (a scientific impossibility), and ended up spinning through space on a planet that was made by nothing for no reason.

Words of Comfort: Earthquake in Christchurch.

"Maybe Ray could tell me where his God was when the earthquake hit Christchurch two years ago...or did those people deserve to die?" Nick Mitchell

You have asked a very similar question to that which was asked of Jesus 2,000 years ago. Certain people came to Him and spoke of a large tower that fell down and tragically took the lives of 18 men. The inference was the same as yours. Did these people do something wrong? Jesus said, "Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:4-8).

There is a tendency in many religions to think that when there are mass deaths through a natural disaster (earthquake, tsunami etc.,) that God punished those who died. However, Jesus didn’t directly address that question. He rather addressed those who were living about their own wickedness. The dead were dead and gone, but those who were still alive could be forgiven their sins, and that was the immediate issue.

You and I have greatly sinned against God and if He allowed His Law to fall upon us in its wrath, it would certainly crush and immediately damn each of us to Hell. But God is rich in mercy and offers us Heaven, if we repent and trust alone in the Savior.

Why Teens Will Share Their Faith – from Dare 2 Share

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovIbiG-TDLE

Youth group testimony!!

(Email from Jeremy Doyle) “I just wanted you to know how blessed Valley Baptist Church’s High School Ministry in Bakersfield, CA is by what you guys do. We trained a group of about 38 students with the “Roots” evangelism DVD series then took them to Indio, CA for a mission trip. God moved in amazing ways there. The students felt very equipped to share the gospel. We brought hundreds of our favorite $1,000,000 tracts. We saw 30 people make decisions and 4 of our students decided to surrender their lives to the ministry. The best thing about this trip is that the students have not stopped sharing their faith. This is our first week back and they have already shared the gospel with teachers, to their family members, friends, out in public places, and all over their campuses. On Tuesday at lunch one of our students open air preached at lunch in the middle of his school. Today I brought him 60 tacos to give away to draw a crowd and he did it again (The attached picture is of Marcus today). A couple of other students open air preached at another campus in Bakersfield and one of them got taken to the dean’s office for open air preaching. (The dean is going to decide if they will be allowed to open air preach in the future) While he was being taken away his brother was able to continue preaching the gospel and answer questions. He said there were 50-60 students before his brother got taken away and about 30 when he continued preaching. God is moving in amazing ways here and students that didn’t even go on the trip are catching onto the fire. Thank you guys for all that you do. You will continue to see orders from us for tracts. God bless you all!”

Words of Comfort: Songbird.

An atheist asked, “If your God was so great, I would see no reason why He would need to force people to submit to Him in worship.”

We are free to be unthankful for our eyesight, hearing, food, sunlight, and all the pleasures He has lavished onto us. But if we die in our sins, we will get justice. That’s why we need a Savior. When He opens our eyes through the new birth, worship comes as easily as songs do to an early morning songbird.

What would you say?

Words of Comfort: The Rose.

I’m thinking of making a rose. I’m going to do it from nothing…like in the beginning. I will need to make a seed that has programed DNA that would tell it to produce tap roots that would, of their own volition, seek after moisture in soil and send the liquid vertical for the nourishment of the plant. The DNA would then have the plant grow a stem, branches, and leaves that were capable of the process of photosynthesis. It would have to make its own sharp thorns (they are a curse), and of course the rose buds. These would automatically blossom into what I’m aiming at–a beautiful rose. The flower itself would contain the usual male and female parts--the pistol and stamen--for reproduction after its own kind. Then there’s the process of pollination that will need to take place, and for that I will need to make sure there’s an aroma and a radiant color that will attract bees. I’m not sure how to do all this, but give me time. Time is the key. Time. There’s also the production of nectar that the bees can turn into the sweetness of honey. When the rose dies, it will have to produce its own seeds, so that it can reproduce after its own kind.

I’ve had time to think about this and its getting a little complicated, mainly because I have to make all this from nothing. Like in the beginning. Making a rose from nothing should have been easy because intelligent scientists say it wasn’t designed with any intelligence. But I feel a little foolish because I don’t know where to begin.

Okay. I’ve given it some serious thought. Making a rose from nothing is way too difficult, and I don’t think I could make one. Not in a million years. No, I think I will leave the rose and try something easy—perhaps a bee.

Words of Comfort: 11 Year-old Boy & Pornography.

I read an article recently written by a mother who was horrified that her 11 year-old son had seen some violent pornography on his phone. He was clearly disturbed by the graphic images, and he told his mother what had happened. She said, “We also talked about how sometimes women choose to go into the sex industry and that when the work is on their terms, that's okay….We talked about why people might access porn. That being curious is completely natural. We talked about the difference between what he watched that was brutal and violent and something that the majority of people might find titillating….I am looking at this through the eyes of my 11-year-old. He can see that there are gradations of porn. Some of it, though an unrealistic view of sex between two consenting adults, is bearable and allows you to retain a basic positive belief in the world.” She gave her 11 year-old some moral guidance--porn was fine, but violent porn wasn’t. Her standards were probably typical of this world that has no moral anchor.

God’s standard is moral perfection. He considers lust to be adultery of the heart (see Matthew 5:27-28), and that’s the standard upon which humanity will be judged. Christians have been air-lifted off the slippery slope that leads to Hell. God miraculously forgave us through Christ, saved us from justice, and gave us a new heart that thirsts after righteousness. The Apostle Paul put it well in Titus 3:3— “For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures…” For me, being a Christian means having a sense of horror at where this morally blind world is heading. But at the same time having an overwhelming gratitude for God’s mercy in saving a wretch like me.

Words of Comfort: Making Fun of Christians.

"Making fun of born-again Christians is like hunting dairy cows with a high powered rifle and scope." P.J. O'Rourke

Don't you love it when the bully who mocks the blind kid gets his face planted in the dirt? Such movies are heart-warming. The Bible says that there is a reason that Christians are the brunt of mockery. It's because “God has ensnared the wicked in his own craftiness." In this world, where the rich get richer and the poor get stomped on, God has done the most wonderful of things. He has chosen foolish things to confound the wise. He chose a cowshed to birth the Savior, a donkey to carry the King of Kings, humility as a way of salvation, a foolish message published in a Book full of foolish stories. Think of the humiliation if you become a Christian. You have to own Noah and the Ark, Jonah and the whale, Daniel and the Lion's den, talking snakes, talking donkeys, walking on water, and the foolishness of the cross. Self-proclaimed intellectuals will take aim at you and mock you for your foolish beliefs. You will have to bear what the Bible calls the "reproach of Christ." The door of eternal life is very low. The proud cannot enter. Such is the heartwarming wisdom of God.

This is an understandable reaction to an unbiblical presentation of the gospel. The popular “Jesus loves you” isn’t in the Bible. If you think it is, try and find even one instance of the apostles using that approach. It’s not there. If, however, that has been the way you reach out to the lost, please take the time to listen to “Hell’s Best Kept Secret” on www.livingwaters.com (it’s not about Hell). This is the same teaching actor, Kirk Cameron, heard back in 2001, and was so moved by it he called our ministry--and that was the beginning of a lifelong partnership in the gospel. It really is a life-changer, so don’t let anything stop you from hearing it and then passing it along.

Words of Comfort: The Internet

In the mid 1990s a friend excitedly shared how the government had interconnected a number of computers for the purpose of sharing information. As another friend and I listened to him, we had no idea how this "Information Highway" was going to change our lives. The Information Highway evolved into "the World Wide Web," and finally settled on being called "The Internet."

Never before in the history of mankind has there been such quick access to so much information and never before have we had the ability to communicate the gospel to so many so freely. If you are a Christian then engage the Internet. Then marry it. Use email, tweet, post, blog, comment, and produce videos. Learn how to articulate to the biblical gospel, because it is the gospel that the Bible says is “the power of God unto salvation.” If you aren’t sure how to present the biblical gospel (as opposed to the false modern gospel) freely watch the hundreds of witnessing clips on www.livingwaters.com. Then pray that billions will find the forgiveness and everlasting life that is alone in Jesus Christ.

Words of Comfort: 4 Infallible Proofs.

Four infallible proofs of God's existence

1. Creation/Nature. It is scientifically impossible for Nature to have made itself, or for it to be eternal. See Romans 1:18-20.

2. Conscience. Conscience is God-given and shaped by society. The word means "with knowledge." We intuitively know right from wrong leaving us without excuse on Judgment Day. See Romans 2:14-15.

3. Commandments. The Ten Commandments awaken us to His standard, so that we can see our terrible danger. See Romans 7:7-13.

4. Conversion. God proves His reality by manifesting Himself through the new birth. See John 14:21. Condensed from, How to Know God Exists -- Finalist: Retailers Choice Awards 2009. Special price:

Today’s Show Notes: Thursday, 18th April 2013.

"What does the Bible say about the prosperity gospel?"
From GotQuestions.org: In the prosperity gospel, also known as the “Word of Faith,” the believer is told to use God, whereas the truth of biblical Christianity is just the opposite—God uses the believer. Word of Faith or prosperity theology sees the Holy Spirit as a power to be put to use for whatever the believer wills. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is a Person who enables the believer to do God's will. The prosperity gospel movement closely resembles some of the destructive greed sects that infiltrated the early church. Paul and the other apostles were not accommodating to or conciliatory with the false teachers who propagated such heresy. They identified them as dangerous false teachers and urged Christians to avoid them.

Paul warned Timothy about such men in1 Timothy 6:5,9-11. These men of “corrupt mind” supposed godliness was a means of gain and their desire for riches was a trap that brought them “into ruin and destruction” (v. 9). The pursuit of wealth is a dangerous path for Christians and one which God warns about: “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (v. 10). If riches were a reasonable goal for the godly, Jesus would have pursued it. But He did not, preferring instead to have no place to lay His head (Matthew 8:20) and teaching His disciples to do the same. It should also be remembered that the only disciple concerned with wealth was Judas.

Paul said covetousness is idolatry (Ephesians 5:5) and instructed the Ephesians to avoid anyone who brought a message of immorality or covetousness (Ephesians 5:6-7). Prosperity teaching prohibits God from working on His own, meaning that God is not Lord of all because He cannot work until we release Him to do so. Faith, according to the Word of Faith doctrine, is not submissive trust in God; faith is a formula by which we manipulate the spiritual laws that prosperity teachers believe govern the universe. As the name “Word of Faith” implies, this movement teaches that faith is a matter of what we say more than whom we trust or what truths we embrace and affirm in our hearts.

A favorite term in the Word of Faith movement is “positive confession.” This refers to the teaching that words themselves have creative power. What you say, Word of Faith teachers claim, determines everything that happens to you. Your confessions, especially the favors you demand of God, must all be stated positively and without wavering. Then God is required to answer (as though man could require anything of God!). Thus, God's ability to bless us supposedly hangs on our faith.James 4:13-16clearly contradicts this teaching: “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Far from speaking things into existence in the future, we do not even know what tomorrow will bring or even whether we will be alive.

Instead of stressing the importance of wealth, the Bible warns against pursuing it. Believers, especially leaders in the church (1 Timothy 3:3), are to be free from the love of money (Hebrews 13:5). The love of money leads to all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Jesus warned, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). In sharp contrast to the Word of Faith emphasis on gaining money and possessions in this life, Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19). The irreconcilable contradictions between prosperity teaching and the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is best summed up in the words of Jesus inMatthew 6:24, “You cannot serve both God and money.”

Words of Comfort: Love Life & Lose It.

"It's amazing, you get a life and you are more concerned about the end of your life than living the one you have. What a sad way to be." Brett M. Wilco

Brett, I say this with respect. You don't know us or how we live. We love our families, laugh a lot, enjoy great food, most of us love sports, we appreciate the beauties of Nature, and on top of that we are loved by God, we love Him, and we live forever. We're not a group of celibate miserable monks, dressed in sackcloth, creeping around some cold monastery with a diet of bread and water and a vow of silence. We love life and we get to keep it. We have been “sealed” by God and have everlasting life promised to us by the God who cannot lie. As an atheist, you love life and you will lose it. What a sad way to be.

Today’s Show Notes: Wednesday, 17th April 2013.

(WALL STREET JOURNAL) Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey first met Jackie Robinson on Aug. 28, 1945. Rickey told Robinson that he wanted to sign the 26-year-old ballplayer and break the national pastime’s color barrier. But for him to succeed, Rickey said, Robinson couldn’t respond to the indignities that would be piled on him: “I’m looking for a ballplayer with guts enough not to fight back.”

Rickey then opened a book published in the 1920s, Giovanni Papini’s “Life of Christ,” and read Jesus’ words: “But whoever shall smite thee on the cheek, turn to him the other also.” Robinson knew the Gospel and knew what was required of him. He replied, “I have two cheeks, Mr. Rickey. Is that it?”

“I can testify to the fact that it was a lot harder to turn the other cheek and refuse to fight back than it would have been to exercise a normal reaction,” Robinson wrote. “But it works, because sooner or later it brings a sense of shame to those who attack you. And that sense of shame is often the beginning of progress.”

If I convert to Christianity, my family will disown me, and I will be persecuted. Should I follow Jesus?”

From Greg Laurie: The great preacher John Wesley was riding along on his horse one day when he realized that three days had passed, and he had not been persecuted in any way. Not a single brick had been thrown in his direction. He had not been hit by an egg. So he actually stopped his horse and said out loud, “Could it be that I am backslidden or I have sinned?” Slipping down from his horse, he knelt on one knee and asked the Lord to show him if there was anything wrong with him spiritually.
A man who disliked Wesley saw him kneeling in prayer, so he picked up a brick and threw it at him, barely missing the preacher. When Wesley saw the brick fly by, he said, “Thank you, Lord! I know I still have Your presence.”
No wonder he was such a powerful preacher.
Your very presence and belief in God bothers some people. Sometimes you don’t even have to say anything. You are like a bright light, shining in a dark place. Jesus said, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you” (John 15:18). You will be treated the same way Jesus was.
Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). Sometimes persecution can show itself in a brick coming our way or in physical harm, even death. At other times, it can show itself in mockery or rejection or losing a job or friends. But if you are living a godly life, then you will face persecution.

What do you say if someone says, “Jesus died on the cross, therefore l am already forgiven of all my sins, regardless of how I live.”

Jesus died on the cross so all your sins could be forgiven, but partaking of that forgiveness is conditional. You must act on what Jesus did for you. The Bible teaches you are to obey the gospel to obtain the forgiveness for which Christ died (Heb. 5:9). You obey the gospel through “repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” Imagine a man discovered he had a terminal disease with no possibility of a natural recovery. His only hope for a normal life would be to obey the commands of his doctor to change his lifestyle, eating habits, and to regularly take special medication. What would you think of that man if he wouldn’t obey the doctor’s life saving commands yet still believed the disease wouldn’t affect him because he had the knowledge there was a cure? You’d think he was a nut. In the same light, you must obey the gospel to partake from the gospel’s promise of forgiveness. Hebrews 12:14: “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”

Words of Comfort: 100% Certain.

“I am not 100% convinced He doesn't exist, and no, I am not 100% convinced that evolution is a fact. But this goes both ways. I am not omnipotent, and neither are Christians. They do not know everything either. So they can't say with absolute certainty that God exists either. However, there is EVIDENCE for evolution, and not evidence for God. Hence, I am an atheist.” Tyler Nelson

I suspect that Tyler has used a wrong word here. I think he means omniscience (all-knowing). No atheist can be 100 % certain that God doesn’t exist, because the professed atheist isn’t omniscient. He doesn’t know everything. Somewhere in the knowledge he hasn’t yet come across, there could be evidence that God exists. So all atheists are in truth “agnostics.” They don’t know if God exists. However, it doesn’t go “both ways.” To know that God exists we don’t need all knowledge. We simply need to have found the knowledge that proves He exists. That evidence is the order of Nature/creation. It is scientifically impossible for nature to have made itself or to have been eternal. The existence of Nature is the observable evidence for God—something that doesn’t need faith. If we want to approach Him to be forgiven, then we need to have faith (trust), but we don’t need faith to know He exists. All that is needed for that is a little common sense. Evolution has no observable evidence and so it necessitates faith. Hence, I am a Christian.

Words of Comfort: Prison Sympathy.

I recently spoke to a 16 year-old who insisted that if a man raped a woman and slit her throat, he wasn’t "bad." She didn’t agree with his actions, but there was a reason he did what he did, and that should be taken into account. When I asked her if Hitler was "bad" in killing six million Jews, she said that he wasn’t. She didn’t agree with what he did and she even sympathized with him because something had obviously caused him to act in the way he did. Predictably, she believed that people go to prison to be rehabilitated rather than to be punished for their crimes. This is because they weren’t bad. They were in prison because they had gone off the rails, and so they needed sympathy.

She was the bad fruit of a world that has brained-washed a generation into believing that there is no good and no bad. It is commonly called "moral relativism." This is “based on what somebody's conscience suggests is right or wrong, rather than on what rules or the law says should be done.” However, the old name for her belief is "antinomianism." This is “the belief that it is impossible to apply a universal moral code because it will have a different meaning for different people.” This belief comes when humanity loses sight of the Ten Commandments (the moral Law).

The Bible isn’t steered by the rudderless morality of this evil world. It says that all of us are worse than "bad." We are desperately wicked, and that the God who will judge each of us is morally perfect. Without the mirror of God’s Law we will never see how unclean we are in the sight of a holy God. Face the mirror, look into its perfect reflection, then run to the cross for cleansing, and live.

Words of Comfort: Believer No More.

"I like Ray; he helped to wake me up. LOL!!! Not in the way he intended though. But thanks to Ray I'm no longer a believer." Cindy Martin

I appreciate you letting me know that Cindy. I have devoted my life to awakening false converts, and it's good to get feedback. The Bible says that those who play the hypocrite deceive themselves. Most don’t even know that there is such a thing as a “false convert,” but the Bible continually addresses the issue, speaking of those who dwell among true believers as “goats” among the “sheep.” They are also referred to as bad fish among the good, tares among the wheat, foolish virgins among the wise. It’s good news when the fakers fall away because they at least have stopped living a lie, by saying that they know God when they don’t. However, there are still millions who haven't fallen away from the faith. They sit as “believers” among Christians, and the Bible warns that they will be sorted out on Judgment Day. They are the many that will cry out to Jesus “Lord, Lord,” and He will reply to them, “Depart from Me you workers of lawlessness. I never knew you.”

Parents hope photo of fatal text serves as warning
(YAHOO NEWS) Alexander Heit’s final text cut off in mid-sentence. Before he could send it, police say the 22-year-old University of Northern Colorado student drifted into oncoming traffic, jerked the steering wheel and went off the road, rolling his car. Heit died shortly after the April 3 crash, but his parents and police are hoping the photo of the mundane text on his iPhone will serve as a stark reminder to drivers.

* The photo, published Wednesday in The Greeley Tribune, shows Heit was responding to a friend by typing “Sounds good my man, seeya soon, ill tw” before he crashed.
* Witnesses told police that Heit appeared to have his head down when he began drifting into the oncoming lane in the outskirts of Greeley, where the University of Northern Colorado is located. According to police, an oncoming driver slowed and moved over just before Heit looked up and jerked the steering wheel.
* Police say Heit, a Colorado native who loved hiking and snowboarding, had a spotless driving record and wasn’t speeding.
* “In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and tear a hole in the heart of everyone who loves you,” Sharon Heit said.

TEXTING STATISTICS:

* On July 27, 2009, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute released a study that found drivers who texted were 23 times more likely to experience a “safety-critical event” when texting.
* The study revealed that when traveling at 55 mph, a driver texting for 6 seconds is looking at the phone for 4.6 seconds of that time and travels the distance of a football field without their eyes on the road.
* In a 2009 experiment with Car and Driver magazine they found texting while driving was more dangerous than drunk driving.

Youth with tracts

(From Jeff and Amy) “We have been watching Way of the Master for a while now and bought the European trip DVDs and have been watching them at home. We also purchased gospel tracts from LivingWaters.com and my boys have been passing them out in our neighborhood, at the Food Lion while I buy groceries, and today Jeffrey and Alex are skateboarding down to the Catholic Church around the corner to pass out tracts there. Words of Comfort: The Root

"Your priorities are so messed up Ray, I think without religion, world peace could be possible; wouldn't that be something?" Andrew Molina

They tried world peace without religion through atheistic communism. It resulted in the slaughter of an estimated 110,000,000 people. The North Korean regime is atheistic, and they are a continual threat to world peace, while religious extremists in the Middle East want to blow Israel off the map. The history of humanity is soaked in the blood of those who have been killed in the name of religion and in the name of atheism. So it's clear that the problem is deeper than atheism or religion. The unexposed root of the problem is sinful human nature that branches out into religion and politics to carry out evil agendas. Human nature is so stubborn, proud, and rebellious that we can hardly agree with each other about anything. I'm sure you would disagree with that.

(Email Kelsey) “I just wanted to share a little story with you guys! I always try to keep some tracts on me and happened to have some million-dollar-bills in my purse when my boyfriend and I were having lunch at Whole Foods in Austin yesterday. At this time of year, there are all kinds of celebrities and musicians and bands to come out for the famous South by Southwest music festival. While we were eating, my boyfriend was able to identify a man walking past us as Macklemoore. In case you are unfamiliar with Macklemoore, he is very popular for the song “Thrift Shop” and has had hundreds of millions of youtube views . . . I asked for the autograph, he gladly gave it to me, and before I left, I told him ‘I’m sure you’ll be able to get something at the thrift shop with this’ and handed him the million. He laughed and accepted. My boyfriend said he watched as I was walking away and saw that Macklemoore did keep the tract. We even checked his table after he left to see if he had left it behind, but it was gone.”

A few weeks ago Macklemoore held the 8th and 9th place spots on iTunes top singles list.

“How should a Christian respond to bullying?”
Free State University published a study reporting that nearly one-third of its students conveyed that they had been abused at some point in the past. The report went on to say that 95% of teachers and nearly 85% of students thought bullying was a huge problem touching just about every life in one way or another.

This happens at ALL ages, especially in school-aged youth.

From GotQuestions.org: Although we do not find the word bullying in the Bible, we do find the word brutish, a synonym of the brutal thuggery associated with thieves, assassins, and savage beasts (Psalm 49:10;Proverbs 12:1;Isaiah 19:11). The Hebrew and Greek words translated “brute” or “brutish” mean “stupid, foolish, and irrational, as cattle.” We can derive from this that those who bully are acting as cattle or other beasts incapable of rational thought. It is, unfortunately, not uncommon to see this type of abhorrent behavior in fallen man—even in the church—in both males and females throughout all life stages.

Sadly, Christians are not immune from attacks by brutish bullies. In fact, Christians are often more likely to be victims, especially if they are trying to live according to Jesus’ command to “turn the other cheek” (Matthew 5:39). That does not mean Christians cannot pray for God to defend them. Are Christians denied the option of self-defense? Not necessarily. All husbands are required to defend their wives, children, families, homes, businesses, and their nations (Ephesians 5:21 – 6:9). Where the bullying of children is involved, it is the parents’ responsibility before God to protect their children and remove them from situations where they may be in danger.

Words Hurt

From CBN.com: If you are ever bullied, remember S.T.O.P.:

S: Stand up to the bully, and use your words to tell him to STOP hurting you.
Say it loudly and clearly for others to hear. Other suggestions include: 1) Turn the bully’s insults into compliments by pretending that the bully said something nice; 2) Try agreeing with the bullying; when a bully does not get the reaction he is looking for, the bullying might stop.

[Focus on the Family: “Be strong and courageous,” Moses encouraged God’s people (Deuteronomy 31:6). “Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Encourage your kids with this verse and remind them that the Lord is always with them. Then, practice phrases your kids can say at a time of particular need, such as “please stop” and “that’s not cool.”]

T: Take appropriate action to get away from the bully, walk or run if need be, or get an adult.
We can follow God’s example. Jesus did not physically fight back against those who bullied him. In Luke 4, when Jesus was treated poorly in the synagogue, he did not fight back, rather he left quietly. However, if you are being hit or kicked, you may need to take physical action to defend yourself, but only take enough action to get away and get help.

O: Open up to a trusted adult in your life, like your parents, a teacher or pastor.
Bullying is serious, and it is not tattling to ask for help from a trusted adult.

P: Protect yourself from bullies.
You can protect yourself from bullying by staying in groups of kids, not walking home alone, and eating lunch in areas near teachers. But remember that if you are bullied, it is not your fault, and you need to get away and get help.

As a parent, take preventative measures to STOP bullying:

Open the lines of communication by talking to your kids about bullying.
Define bullying so your children know what it is. Bullies are children who intentionally and repeatedly tease, exclude, or physically hurt other children. “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7). Our children must have a clear understanding of what bullying is in order to recognize it and protect themselves and others.

Teach your children not to be a bully.
“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24). Your children must understand that bullying is not only hitting, but hurtful words as well. Children do not have to like or include everyone, but they should never be cruel to anyone!

Discuss what to do if they witness another child being bullied.
“A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a word spoken in due season, how good it is!” (Proverbs 15:23). Prepare your children with words like, “STOP hurting my friend,” or, “STOP being mean!” Encourage them to get help from a nearby adult if needed.

Words of Comfort: The Greatest Deception.

The greatest deception to fall upon humanity isn't atheism, communism, universalism, asceticism, or pantheism. It is by far the deception of self-righteousness--the erroneous belief that man can earn immortality through religious works. Hundreds of millions are deceived by it. But God in His great kindness has provided something that will remove the blinders. If you will allow it to, the moral Law will show you that a double-amputee has more chance of leaping across the widest part of the Grand Canyon, than you and I have of working our way to Heaven. If you want to live forever, simply repent, trust alone in Jesus, then relax. Rest in the Savior. He did it all on the cross: "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

“Where can I find the Sinner’s Prayer in the Bible? Is there a certain chapter and verse?”

There isn’t a scripted ‘sinner’s prayer’ in the Bible. The ‘sinner’s prayer’ is a recent man made invention. The early disciples simply preached the gospel and called everyone to faith filled repentance. If someone was willing to commit themselves to Christ they were baptized in water. Modern day ‘sinner’s prayers’ and altar calls for that matter are relatively new phenomena. It is estimated that the philosophy of the ‘sinner’s prayer’ originated about 500 years ago. However, it was not until the twentieth century that the formal ‘sinner’s prayer’ method was widely accepted by mainline Christian churches.
This will be a shock to some, but when a lost soul repeats a ‘sinner’s prayer’ that does not necessarily mean they’re saved. Any good charlatan can get a naïve soul to say anything, even a prayer. That’s the power of persuasion, but that doesn’t mean the person is the better for it. Time after time a concerned saint has manipulated a loved one into praying a ‘sinner’s prayer’ while compromising the Biblical commitment to Christ. Later on many notice no fruits of repentance in their loved one’s life. They often console themselves with the knowledge that their loved one prayed “the prayer” and therefore must certainly be saved. However heartbreaking this may be, if there is no reliance upon Christ (if they don’t become a follower of Jesus), regardless of any prayer spoken, there is no salvation. Salvation only comes when a person repents and believes in Christ, which can be at an altar call or while praying a ‘sinner’s prayer’ but it doesn’t have to be. The early Christians focused on preaching what they had been commanded to preach, that which alone can deliver salvation: repentance toward God and faith in Christ (Lk. 24:47). If we’ll be faithful to Christ’s commission that’s what we’ll preach: that people must obey the gospel. We’ll teach that God commands all men everywhere to repent because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness (Acts 17:30,31).
In conclusion, neither ‘sinner’s prayers’ nor altar calls are in the Bible and we are certainly not required by God to employ these techniques. However, I’d be slow to totally condemn the practices. God can and has used these methods. The point of the matter is we must be careful to never exchange any Biblical command for a new innovation; the technique can compliment the command, but never replace it. We mustn’t compromise the message in any way or at any cost.

Words of Comfort: Who Is He?

Mormons say that He was Lucifer's brother. Jews say He was an imposter. Muslims say He was a prophet. Atheists say He didn't exist. Gandhi admired Him. Hitler hated Him. Jehovah's witnesses say that He was the Archangel Michael. The Bible says He was God in human form, the Christ, the Son of the Living God, that He is the only Door to everlasting life. Pontius Pilate didn't know what to do with Him, so he washed his hands of Him. Who is Jesus of Nazareth to you, and what are you going to do with Him?

Yesterday’s Show Notes: Monday, 8th April 2013.

(From Roger Ebert’s book, Life Itself: A Memoir as quoted by SALON)
“I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear . . . Still, illness led me resolutely toward the contemplation of death. That led me to the subject of evolution, that most consoling of all the sciences, and I became engulfed on my blog in unforeseen discussions about God, the afterlife, religion, theory of evolution, intelligent design, reincarnation, the nature of reality, what came before the big bang, what waits after the end, the nature of intelligence, the reality of the self, death, death, death.
. . . Many readers have informed me that it is a tragic and dreary business to go into death without faith. I don’t feel that way. ‘Faith’ is neutral. All depends on what is believed in. I have no desire to live forever. The concept frightens me. I am 69, have had cancer, will die sooner than most of those reading this. That is in the nature of things.
.  . . What I expect to happen is that my body will fail, my mind will cease to function and that will be that. My genes will not live on, because I have had no children. I am comforted by Richard Dawkins’ theory of memes. Those are mental units: thoughts, ideas, gestures, notions, songs, beliefs, rhymes, ideals, teachings, sayings, phrases, clichés that move from mind to mind as genes move from body to body. After a lifetime of writing, teaching, broadcasting and telling too many jokes, I will leave behind more memes than many. They will all also eventually die, but so it goes.”

“Could you be wrong in your claims about Judgment Day and the existence of hell?”

From Evidence Bible:  The existence of hell and the surety of the judgment are not the claims of fallible man. The Bible is the source of the claim, and it is utterly infallible. When someone becomes a Christian, he is admitting that he was in the wrong, and that God is justified in His declarations that we have sinned against Him.

However, let’s surmise for a moment that there is no Judgment Day and no hell. That would mean that the Bible is a huge hoax, in which more than forty authors collaborated (over a period of 3,000 years) to produce a document revealing God’s character as “just.” They portrayed Him as a just judge, who warned that He would eventually punish murderers, rapists, liars, thieves, adulterers, etc. Each of those writers (who professed to be godly) therefore bore false witness, transgressing the very commandments they claimed to be true.

It would mean that Jesus Christ was a liar, and that all the claims He made about the reality of judgment were there-fore false. It would also mean that He gave His life in vain, as did multitudes of martyrs who have given their lives for the cause of Christ. Add to that the thought that if there is no ultimate justice, it means that the Creator of all things is unjust—that He sees murder and rape and couldn’t care less, making Him worse than a corrupt human judge who refuses to bring criminals to justice.

Words of Comfort: Science?

"I'd love to see these creationists response when we do finally make some or other form of life. The day is coming.... science, you gotta love it."

All the combined brains of our most intelligent scientists haven't a clue how to even begin to make one grain of sand from nothing, let alone create the utter complexity of even one cell of organic life. It is comparatively simple to recreate something using God's existing materials, but we can't make simplest form of non-organic life from nothing. Such utter human powerlessness reveals the intellectual embarrassment of atheism.

Gate to Hell’ found in Turkey

(NEW YORK POST) A “gate to hell” has emerged from ruins in southwestern Turkey, Italian archaeologists have announced. Known as Pluto’s Gate -- Ploutonion in Greek, Plutonium in Latin -- the cave was celebrated as the portal to the underworld in Greco-Roman mythology and tradition. Historic sources located the site in the ancient Phrygian city of Hierapolis, now called Pamukkale, and described the opening as filled with lethal mephitic vapors.
“This space is full of a vapor so misty and dense that one can scarcely see the ground. Any animal that passes inside meets instant death,” the Greek geographer Strabo (64/63 BC -- about 24 AD) wrote.
“I threw in sparrows and they immediately breathed their last and fell,” he added.

(Email from Garry in Alberta, Canada) “I have been sharing with a number of people and the subject of Hell has come up twice. With one individual I have been conversing by passing papers back and forth. I know it is an intellectual argument but he is not willing to answer my questions about being a good person. I am also learning that there is some sort of move in the church (Rob Bell’s “Love Wins” for example) toward universalism. Could you respond to the reality of Hell and that it is indisputable? I know Jesus said it and that’s good enough for me but I’m not convincing those who think that annihilation is the outcome for the lost or that everyone goes to heaven.”

From GotQuestions.org: Annihilationism is the belief that unbelievers will not experience an eternity of suffering in hell, but will instead be “extinguished” after death. For many, annihilationism is an attractive belief because of the awfulness of the idea of people spending eternity in hell. While there are some passages that seem to argue for annihilationism, a comprehensive look at what the Bible says about the destiny of the wicked reveals the fact that punishment in hell is eternal. A belief in annihilationism results from a misunderstanding of one or more of the following doctrines: 1) the consequences of sin, 2) the justice of God, 3) the nature of hell.

In relation to the nature of hell, annihilationists misunderstand the meaning of the lake of fire. Obviously, if a human being were cast into a lake of burning lava, he/she would be almost instantly consumed. However, the lake of fire is both a physical and spiritual realm. It is not simply a human body being cast into the lake of fire; it is a human’s body, soul, and spirit. A spiritual nature cannot be consumed by physical fire. It seems that the unsaved are resurrected with a body prepared for eternity just as the saved are (Revelation 20:13;Acts 24:15). These bodies are prepared for an eternal fate.

Eternity is another aspect which annihilationists fail to fully comprehend. Annihilationists are correct that the Greek word aionion, which is usually translated “eternal,” does not by definition mean “eternal.” It specifically refers to an “age” or “eon,” a specific period of time. However, it is clear that in New Testament, aionion is sometimes used to refer to an eternal length of time. Revelation 20:10speaks of Satan, the beast, and the false prophet being cast into the lake of fire and being tormented “day and night forever and ever.” It is clear that these three are not “extinguished” by being cast into the lake of fire. Why would the fate of the unsaved be any different (Revelation 20:14-15)? The most convincing evidence for the eternality of hell is Matthew 25:46, “Then they [the unsaved] will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” In this verse, the same Greek word is used to refer to the destiny of the wicked and the righteous. If the wicked are only tormented for an “age,” then the righteous will only experience life in heaven for an “age.” If believers will be in heaven forever, unbelievers will be in hell forever.

Another frequent objection to the eternality of hell by annihilationists is that it would be unjust for God to punish unbelievers in hell for eternity for a finite amount of sin. How could it be fair for God to take a person who lived a sinful, 70-year life, and punish him/her for all of eternity? The answer is that our sin bears an eternal consequence because it is committed against an eternal God. When King David committed the sins of adultery and murder he stated, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight…” (Psalm 51:4). David had sinned against Bathsheba and Uriah; how could David claim to have only sinned against God? David understood that all sin is ultimately against God. God is an eternal and infinite Being. As a result, all sin against Him is worthy of an eternal punishment. It is not a matter of the length of time we sin, but the character of the God against whom we sin.

A more personal aspect of annihilationism is the idea that we could not possibly be happy in heaven if we knew that some of our loved ones were suffering an eternity of torment in hell. However, when we arrive in heaven, we will not have anything to complain about or be saddened by. Revelation 21:4 tells us, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” If some of our loved ones are not in heaven, we will be in 100 percent complete agreement that they do not belong there and that they are condemned by their own refusal to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior (John 3:16;14:6). It is hard to understand this, but we will not be saddened by the lack of their presence. Our focus should not be on how we can enjoy heaven without all of our loved ones there, but on how we can point our loved ones to faith in Christ so that they will be there.

Hell is perhaps a primary reason why God sent Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our sins. Being “extinguished” after death is no fate to dread, but an eternity in hell most definitely is. Jesus’ death was an infinite death, paying our infinite sin debt so that we would not have to pay it in hell for eternity (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we place our faith in Him, we are saved, forgiven, cleansed, and promised an eternal home in heaven. But if we reject God’s gift of eternal life, we will face the eternal consequences of that decision.
